Fabrimetal's first collaboration with SMS group involved the supply of an innovative bar and wire rod mill in Dakar, Senegal, which is designed to enhance product quality and operational efficiency. The new plant in Dakar, with an annual capacity of 350,000 tons, supports Fabrimetal's expansion into local and neighboring markets by serving as a logistical hub. Its production of straight bars and wire rod coils meets the increasing demand in these regions, aligning with the company's growth objectives. In addition to its technical advancements, the project highlights a shared commitment to sustainability, with Fabrimetal's parent company, MMD, actively participating in carbon offset initiatives.
The plant will utilize the latest SMS rolling mill innovations, achieving a remarkable yield of 97.5%, significantly higher than the 95% typically offered by regional suppliers. This high yield translates into better resource utilization and reduced waste, which are crucial for cost-effective operations. The plant's High-Speed Delivery (HSD) system allows rapid attainment of full production capacity across the bar line size range, enhancing material yield and mill utilization, leading to a faster return on investment. Fabrimetal's parent company, MMD, is committed to sustainability through its significant carbon offset initiatives, such as planting over 2 million trees annually across Africa. This commitment, combined with SMS’ technology, ensures that the plant not only meets high production standards but also contributes to sustainable development in Africa.

The core of its innovation lies in the utilization of SMS' advanced rolling mill technology, which significantly enhances production efficiency and product quality. Designed to output 350,000 tons of straight bars in bundles and wire rod coils per year, the new plant enables Fabrimetal to expand its product portfolio. Thanks to SMS's patented High-Speed Delivery (HSD) system the plant offers a high degree of flexibility by producing both bars and wire rod.
The plant's design incorporates a seamless integration of digital solutions for optimized operations. The X-Pact® technology will manage the entire plant, including billet handling and combustion control, ensuring efficient energy use.
