The new plant feeds into a retrofitted natural gas injection system, which enables HKM to inject up to 30,000 Nm³/h of coke oven gas or a mixture of coke oven gas and natural gas up to 42,000 Nm³/h into each blast furnace. This results in a smoother blast furnace operation, significant reduction of the coke rate and thus significant CO₂ savings. Since fewer CO₂ certificates have to be purchased, amortization is achieved in a very short time.
