ECOACERO, an ESTRELLA Group company, has placed an order with SMS group for a new rebar mill. It will be located nearby Santo Domingo, in Dominican Republic, for serving the growing local construction industry. The ambition is to strengthen market position and become one of the largest steel companies in this region. The mill commissioning is scheduled for the beginning of 2025. 

As one of the largest construction services and products groups in the Dominican Republic, ESTRELLA is enhancing its vertical integration to meet growing demand in local, Caribbean, and Central American markets. The new rebar mill will offer a versatile range of rebar, manufactured with advanced SMS technology and a production capacity of up to 400,000 tons of rebar per year. The project, focused on sustainability, includes integrating a steel production process with a melt shop and continuous casting machine from scrap processing.

Advanced features and comprehensive automation systems reduce operating costs. The production capacity of up to 400,000 tons of rebar per year enables an efficient serving of growing customer demands. 

SMS group's comprehensive scope for Ecoacero’s mill includes the design of the entire rebar mill and the delivery of mechanical and electrical equipment, enabling a single source of supply. Special features of this mill include a MEERdrive® finishing block that reduces CO2 emissions and boosts plant efficiency, and water boxes that enhance steel properties through quenching and self-tempering, minimizing the need for expensive alloying elements. The rolling mill will be fully automated with SMS technology, connected to the SMS Mercury process optimization system. Additionally the mill includes an electric arc furnace equipped with advanced burner and oxygen injector technology to further reduce CO2 emissions: The entire melting-refining-casting process line is monitored by X-Pact® Level 2 system, which ensures the perfect and smooth interface with the phase-1 rolling Mill.
