SMS group to supply automation for JISCO’s new 4,200 mm heavy plate mill

Enhanced process performance with X-Pact® automation systems

Jiugang Group Hongxing Iron & Steel Co., Ltd (JISCO), located in Jiayuguan, China, plans to bring a new 4,200-mm heavy plate mill on stream to address the limitations of its existing 2,800-mm plate mill, thereby enhancing its competitiveness and optimizing its product portfolio. SMS group will supply the automation systems for the 4,200 mm heavy plate mill, with the new line significantly improving process performance.

SMS group is taking an integrated and holistic approach to setting up the automation equipment in the finishing mill with its renowned X-Pact® basic and process automation packages. These automation systems, along with the tracking and coordination of sequences for the entire line in the hot zone, ensure that all system components work together in perfect harmony. Using state-of-the-art software and development tools, SMS group implements international standards in its innovative, structured, and modularized software architecture. Technical advantages include not only effective diagnostics with faceplates and pop-ups for faster and better analysis of the production process, but also rapid troubleshooting in particular.

The scope of supply includes advanced X-Pact® Profile and Flatness Control (PFC®) and X-Pact® Pass Schedule Calculation (PSC®) models, as well as the newly developed End Compensation Function in the level 1 automation. When the actuator reaches its limit, PSC® and PFC® process models interact rapidly by optimizing the load distribution to achieve the ideal plate profile and ensure maximum production capacity as well as superior product quality. The plate is relatively thin approximately 500 mm from the head or tail due to the change in temperature or rolling force. The End Compensation Function was developed to solve this problem, and significantly improves plate production output.

Building on the strong foundation of past collaboration, the joint project team anticipates the first plate by September of 2025.
