ArcelorMittal Vega celebrates the first coil of the new annealing and hot-dip galvanizing line

In September 2024, ArcelorMittal Vega, located in São Francisco do Sul, Brazil, successfully commissioned its new combined annealing and hot-dip galvanizing line (CAL/CGL). This milestone marks the completion of a significant expansion project undertaken in cooperation with SMS group. The CAL/CGL line represents a key enhancement to Vega’s production capacities, primarily serving automotive and household industries.

Plant technology

ArcelorMittal Vega's new CAL/CGL line is designed for dual functionality, combining annealing and galvanizing processes to produce high-strength steel. With an annual capacity of 640,000 tons, the line can process strips ranging from 0.4 to 3.0 mm in thickness and up to 1,875 mm in width, operating at a maximum speed of 200 m/min.

The end products include GI coated steel, Magnelis® coated steel (ZnMg), and annealed steel. Coming from the future requirement of handling high-strength steel, each piece of mechanical and process equipment installed in the line is designed and already capable of handling steel strip with a yield strength of at least 1500 MPa.

Key features of the CAL/CGL:

  • Dual functionality: Combines annealing and galvanizing processes for enhanced production efficiency.
  • DREVER furnace: Provides optimal heating and cooling for high-quality annealing.
  • Compact cleaning section: Ensures efficient pre-treatment of the strip.
  • Horizontal roll coater: Guarantees precise coating application.
