Revamp integrates SMS group's X-Pact® automation for enhanced production flexibility and high-quality steel grade expansion

WISDRI Engineering & Research Incorporation Limited and JISCO Carbon Steel collaborate with SMS group to revamp JISCO’s strip mill and establish the world's first plant combining Hot Strip Mill (HSM) and Compact Strip Production (CSP®) modes, increasing JISCO's production capacity from 2 million to 3.5 million tons annually. SMS group will implement its X-Pact® automation system, enhancing mill management and production flexibility. Modifications include converting the tunnel furnace's swiveling car into a shifting car and redesigning entry roller tables. This collaboration marks a 20-year partnership focused on trust and technological innovation.

WISDRI Engineering & Research Incorporation and JISCO Carbon Steel undertake a major revamp of JISCO’s strip mill in Jiayuguan, China, relying on SMS group’s automation and service solutions. This project creates the world's first plant that combines Hot Strip Mill operation modes and Compact Strip Production (CSP®) operation modes. The revamp aims to boost JISCO's production capacity from 2 million to 3.5 million tons annually and expand its product range to include various high-quality steel grades.

SMS group will implement the comprehensive X-Pact® automation system to manage the mill from the discharging roller tables to the end of the coil transportation system, incorporating level 1 and level 2 systems and X-Pact® Vision HMI. To facilitate the new production mode, the tunnel furnace's swiveling car is modified into a shifting car to transfer slabs to the finishing mill's entry . The entry roller tables are redesigned as shifting roller tables to accommodate this change.

A rolling schedule to combine the slab discharging from the reheating furnaces and from the tunnel furnaces is created and realized in the new X-Pact® process automation. The models of the level 2 system adapt according to whether the strip isdelivered from the tunnel furnace or from the reheating furnaces.

Post-revamp, the mill features a roller hearth tunnel furnace, two walking-beam reheating furnaces, a high-pressure water descaling box, a slab size press, two sets of four high reversible roughing mill stands with vertical edgers, a crop shear, six finishing mill stands, a laminar cooling system, three downcoilers, and a coil transportation line.

The collaboration builds on a 20-year partnership between SMS and JISCO, emphasizing mutual trust and technological innovation
