Zubb Steel in Lopburi, Thailand has awarded SMS group the contract to supply four X-Pact^® AURA power electronics modules, to be installed in the existing steel making plant that was supplied by SMS group in the early 1990s. The goal of sustainable and energy-efficient production and the strategic plant upgrade aimed at reducing OPEX motivated Zubb Steel to cooperate with SMS group to replace the conventional EAF power supply systems, which are based on thyristor controlled rectifiers, with feeding solutions based on advanced IGBT (insulated-gate bipolar transistor) technology.

The X-Pact^® AURA (Advanced Unit Rectifier Assembly) is designed to achieve efficient and stable power control to feed DC arc furnaces in all power network configurations, including weak grids. Based on state-of-the-art IGBT technology, this new design is world class in terms of its current stability, dynamic performance, efficiency, reliability, redundancy, and minimal impact on electric network quality.

Compared to the conventional thyristor-based DC design, X-Pact^® AURA offers the customer an unprecedented improvement in the key power quality parameters, with a power factor of over 0.95 and 30% flicker reduction.
