thyssenkrupp Rasselstein boosts energy efficiency with SMS group’s advanced power supply modules

In July 2024, thyssenkrupp Rasselstein awarded SMS group the contract to upgrade the DC power supply for its electrolytic tinning line in Andernach, Germany. The modernization involves the replacement of the existing thyristor system with 44 X-Pact® High Current switch-mode rectifiers. This upgrade is scheduled for installation in November 2024 and is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency and sustainability of packaging steel production.

Plant Technology

The modernization project focuses on replacing the old thyristor system with advanced X-Pact® High Current switch-mode rectifiers for highly efficient electrical power conversion. Unlike traditional thyristors, these rectifiers operate with high frequencies, reducing energy waste and improving control over voltage and current output. The new system enables process-oriented power supply performance with low maintenance and offers surface possibilities for packaging steel through advanced pulse plating technology.

Alongside energy savings, the new system reduces the costs of installation, commissioning, and maintenance. Thanks to modularization, fewer spare parts are required. In the event of a failure of modules or towers, other modules take over automatically, which significantly increases availability compared to previous systems based on individual towers.

Key benefits of the new switch-mode rectifiers include:

  • High energy efficiency (over 94%) across the entire working range
  • Improved performance with better control accuracy and reduced ripple effects
  • Modularized design that enhances system availability and minimizes downtime
  • Advanced surface design options through pulse/pulse reverse plating technology

thyssenkrupp Rasselstein’s commitment to this modernization showcases its ongoing efforts toward more sustainable and efficient production processes at Europe’s largest packaging steel production site.
