The project is another chapter in the long-standing partnership between the ArcelorMittal and SMS group and underlines companies’ commitment to safety and operational excellence. The converter, which now operates with an optimized tendon suspension system had been also supplied and installed by SMS group in 1999. That extensive knowledge of the customer's plants was the foundation for the successful execution of the complex, high-precision erection works, while maintaining the integrity of the plant at the same time.
To meet the specific requirements the customer and reduce the shutdown period needed, SMS group developed a solution that included detailed engineering, aiming to facilitate the installation of the new suspension system in the converter. Techniques such as cryogenics to freeze parts and the use of strand jacks were used to ensure safety, quality and speed during erection. SMS group elevated the precision of the execution with lifting frames manufactured in its own workshop facilities in Brazil.
