Modular gear innovation: Transforming mechanical closed-die forging presses

During the workshop visit, Christoph Sundermann (SMS group), Alexander Schwaiger (CEO Hammerwerk Fridingen), Reiner Straub (Hammerwerk Fridingen), Andreas Lubetzke (Hammerwerk Fridingen), Thomas Dastig (SMS group), Maximilian Pöschk (SMS group) (from left to right) inspected the split arrow-toothed gear.

Manufacturing technology in the field of mechanical closed-die forging presses has seen significant progress with the introduction of split arrow-toothed gears. These innovative components mark a significant improvement over traditional cast gears, which were associated for their long delivery times, high costs, and an increased susceptibility to errors. Our customer Hammerwerk Fridingen was recently able to see the advantages of these modularly constructed gears during a customer visit in our workshop in Hilchenbach, Germany.

Developed since 2019 and successfully implemented in practice since 2021, these modular gears are already demonstrating their value. Two German customers serve as prime examples of the technology's successful application, reaping the benefits of the new design. A recent highlight in this innovative product line was the successful on-site inspection and approval of a gear by Hammerwerk Fridingen at our Hilchenbach workshop. This visit not only emphasized the strong collaboration and trust between SMS and our clients but also showcased the exceptional quality and performance of our products.

The modular gear concept offers substantial economic advantages to users. The key advancement lies in the design's modularity. In case of wear, there's no longer a need to replace the entire gearwheel. Instead, the arrow-toothed gear rim can be replaced separately, resulting in a significant reduction in maintenance costs. This not only saves material costs but also reduces press downtime that would otherwise be caused by extensive repair and replacement work.

With 150 years of experience in the field of metal processing and comprehensive know-how in value creation, SMS offers expertise that goes far beyond the mere supply of components. Our over 125 years of experience in gear design and manufacturing in Hilchenbach play a crucial role in this successful collaboration. From the design to the production of the split gears, everything is done in-house. This control over the entire manufacturing process ensures the highest quality and enables us to respond flexibly to specific customer requirements. The result is tailor-made solutions that not only reduce operating costs but also enhance the productivity and reliability of the closed-die forging presses. Furthermore, a patent is pending on the essential aspects of the split gear to secure exclusive benefits for our customers.

We understand the complex requirements of the forging industry and are able to advise our customers in every detail. We look forward to continuing to support this industrial sector with our advanced solutions and to further strengthen our partnership with our clients, building on a foundation of innovation, trust, and shared success.
