Digital commissioning of automation for new rail and section production plant

The original automation hard- and software for a new rail and section production plant is installed at the X-Pact® Plug & Work test center in Mönchengladbach, Germany, and linked to a virtual simulation of the plant. The programming engineers test their applications against real-time 3D simulations of the plant – basically a digital twin of the real plant – long before the original plant is installed on site.

By using X-Pact® Vision, operation and processes are simulated and virtualized in real time. This integration test concept developed by SMS group enables digital commissioning of the automation under realistic conditions and significantly reduces commissioning times.

Dirk Köhler, Head of Sales and Execution Electrics/Automation Long Products, emphasizes: “For this project, we are testing the complete automation equipment for the probably most complex rail and section rolling mill in the world. Nothing should be left to chance here. With this test, we know that the automation systems are working hand-in-hand.

Technological features as well as mechanical designers’ 3D models created for this mill line are considered. The 3D simulation model brings the plant into the test field for virtual operation. All movements have their design speed. For example, roll change sequences can be tested, checking not only the sequence but also the timing of each step”.

During the ongoing erection and commissioning period, SMS group experts will supervise activities and provide training for the customer’s personnel. The integration test of the automation system will greatly support the training of customers’ operating personnel.
