A game changer – how Tata Steel benefits from SMS group’s Conseal for Slabs

No cooling scrap, no breakouts

SMS group successfully introduced Conseal for Slabs at Tata Steel IJmuiden in the Netherlands. The new product improves the roll startup process of casters by ensuring a sealed mold, which significantly reduces the breakout rate.

Conseal for Slabs is installed within minutes. It is inserted into the mold of the slab casters and sits securely on the dummy bar head, creating a fully sealed mold. It eliminates the need for using cooling scrap, which is still a common but not ideal quick fix for many companies in the metals industry. This now outdated approach of using sealing materials such as cooling scrap has led to many breakouts in the past and caused significant pain points for maintenance crews. At regular intervals, parts of the sealing materials would fall into the interiors of systems and cause substantial damage to the plants over time.

At Tata Steel IJmuiden, Conseal for Slabs has eliminated this problem and ensures a smooth startup process while it is optimally connected to the strand, forming a strong and reliable bond. During the deployment at the Dutch location, no steel was able to bypass the yellow solution that was clearly visible even after contact with over 1,400 °C hot steel.

Eric B. from Tata Steel IJmuiden emphasizes the improvements brought by the newly launched solution: “Using Conseal for Slabs, we've eliminated the need for cooling scrap and reduced the risk of startup breakouts to a minimum, all while significantly reducing our preparation time. It will be a game changer for our operations!"
