In November 2008, SMS acquired the mechanical engineering and construction division of SCHUMAG, which was founded in 1830 in Aachen as a needle manufacturer. Before that, in 1994, SCHUMAG already took over the product portfolio of the engineering factory Th. Kieserling & Albrecht. The company continued to operate as SMS SCHUMAG from its location in Aachen.

In 2015, a complete relocation to Mönchengladbach was undertaken to further strenghten the business field. This integration enabled SMS to expand its local manufacturing program to include drawing, peeling, straightening, and grinding technology for bright steel. Drawing of copper was also incorporated. For service-related matters, SMS group now offers solutions for bright steel plants.

In doing so, SMS acknowledged and continued the good name and product reputation of the SCHUMAG and Kieserling brand.
