SMS group signed a contract for the supply of a new heavy section and rail rolling mill to be built in the region IMEA (Italy, Middle East and Africa). The new mill will be the first of its kind in the region and will produce a wide range of beams, including jumbo beams, as well as U- and Z-shaped sheet piles, rails and channels. The project will strongly contribute to the infrastructure of the region, in particular the railway network for passenger traffic, which shall be subject to a massive transformation over the next few years.
Our scope of supply comprises all facilities and components for the rail and section mill – from the reheating furnace down to the dispatch area. The ultra-modern mill, equipped with Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems, will be designed to fulfill the highest environmental standards.
“This new mill will be designed to meet extremely demanding quality requirements. It will feature the capacity of thermo-mechanical rolling and will be equipped with an inline heat treatment section for beams. Thanks to this layout, alloying elements can be saved in the steel production process and the mechanical properties of the final products will be further optimized. Inline rail head hardening will improve the wear resistance and the durability of the end products,” states Thomas Massmann, Vice President Long Products, SMS group.
The reheating furnace will be equipped with SMS-EcoFlamePLUS low NOx burners, which assure an efficient combustion process and high flexibility in terms of the conditions of use and the respective thermal performance requirements. The digital ignition control logic and the SMS Prometheus® Level-2 burner optimization system provide for an optimum reheating process.
The heavy-section reversing roughing stand will be equipped with a lower hydraulic adjustment system and a hydraulic axial adjustment system for the upper roll. The reversing tandem group will feature the latest generation of CCS (Compact Cartridge Stand) universal stands, including the new TCS plus technological control system. The horizontal straightener of the latest CRS (Compact Roller Straightener) design includes an automatic quick roll-changing device.
PROgauge, a laser-based profile measuring system for rails and sections, enables inline dimension measurements of the complete range of sections and rails produced and the recognition and analysis of surface defects.
The SMS group supply package also includes a water treatment plant, a pressurized-air station, cranes and roll shop equipment, and quality-relevant ancillary facilities, as the laboratory, for example. In addition, SMS group will supervise the assembly and commissioning activities and provide training for the customer’s personnel.
