For high-precision, stress-free steel plates
The new cross-cut shearing line in the SMS group plant portfolio efficiently produces high-quality steel plates, including from high-strength grades, up to a thickness of 25.4 mm, guaranteeing maximum precision with significantly minimized inherent stresses.
The challenges facing plant operators
When it comes to industrial applications, precision is of crucial significance. This is why, for example, plates need to demonstrate minimal inherent stresses if they are processed using laser or plasma cutting techniques. Inherent stresses can have a severely negative impact on further processing as well as considerably reduce safety reserves and significantly lower cost-effectiveness and revenue.
With the new cross cut shearing line from SMS group, these challenges can be overcome on a lasting basis. The line is the solution to producing high-quality, stress-free strip products that allow the value-added chains for downstream processes to be made more reliable and more efficient.

Two basic layouts
Both designs are implemented according to SMS group’s proven line concept. This also includes the sophisticated leveling models from SMS group which, depending on the steel grade and strip dimension, ensure optimum settings and thus perfect flatness with minimal inherent stresses. In the case of the conventional line concept with two levelers (pre-leveler and precision leveler), a significant increase in yield strength is also achieved, thereby enabling the production of strips with higher strength

Precision leveler
The centerpiece of the cross-cut shearing line is the precision leveler. The machine operates with hydraulic and position-controlled adjustment systems under load. In particular, the individual adjustments of the bottom leveling rolls help to reduce the inherent stresses in the material.
Presetting and bending system
Other highlights of the precision leveler include automatic presetting and the bending compensation system, which ensures a uniform roll gap over the entire width.
Servo systems
The leveler settings are achieved by the perfectly coordinated interaction of the main adjustment cylinders, bending compensation system, and individual roll adjustment of the bottom leveling rolls. The initial overstretching and the optimized plastification eliminate "old" inherent stresses and thus create the ideal conditions for the further processing steps for the strip products.
Multi-roller cassette design
The leveling roll cassettes enable the leveling rolls to be changed automatically in less than 20 minutes. They are each pre-configured with different roll diameters each and designed to level high-strength steels.

Entry section
The entry section with the payoff reel ensures safe and reliable charging of the cross cut shearing line. Special features include the variable pressure roller configurations, especially for high-strength strips, and the double pinch roll for improved uncoiling tension. Gentle uncoiling is ensured by a multifunctional processor roll and the automatic entry control system with separate sequences.

Pre-leveler
Depending on the customer's requirements, there are two pre-levelers to choose from:
-
For thick strip with a thickness of up to 25.4 mm
-
For thinner strip with a thickness of up to 12.7 mm
-

Trimming shear
The rotary side trimming shear trims the strip edges and cuts the strip to the desired width with a high degree of precision. Here too, two solutions are available to meet customer's individual requirements: Trimming shear for thick strips of up to 25.4 mm thickness or for thin strips up to 12.7 mm thick. The trimming shear is equipped with a scrap chopper, which cuts the side trimmings into small pieces.

Flying shear
The flying shear is characterized by its reliable and proven cutting technology. To avoid deformation caused by the cut, particularly in the case of thin strip, the top knife and the bottom knife move toward each other when cutting. The automatic adjustment of the knife gap ensures a high level of cutting quality. The uniform cutting geometry achieves precise results with every cut.

Stacking system with two sections
The system, which can be adjusted to the desired strip dimensions and package parameters, automatically performs all stacking processes. Moreover, a variety of optional equipment is available, including brush rollers, vacuum cleaners, or electromagnetic solutions.
